ok, i'm kind of breaking my own rules here because this isn't even mildly intellectual. or maybe it is. hmm. but anyway, they're my rules and i'm going to take advantage of that right now. so i would just like to say the www.googlism.com is amazingly entertaining.

toolband.com has addressed the track reordering and fibonacci sequence of lateralus in response to an e-mail to the stie. there are a lot of different versions of this theory, and this e-mail is just one of them. i only have that part of it here, but the rest on the website involves other e-mails about rumors regarding the band and the replies. it's funny shit, be sure to check it out.

Subject:you may say i'm a dreamer
Posted by:drunkencarousal.
Time:12:30 pm.
Mood: curious.
over two years ago i went to see tool perform- maynard didn't speak much, all i remember is something at the end and earlier when he said the usual "think for yourself. queston authority." my friend joked about this afterward- that we couldn't actually be thinking for yourself as a result of what he said because he told us to.

you can pick out holes like this all the time in anything. but when they say those words "THINK FOR YOURSELF. QUESTION AUTHORITY" does it mean anything to you as a listener? i've never needed to- i got my liberation from listening to the music in general. never really thought about it. yet, in the back of my mind i thought it contradictory. the music in general has this message- so why does he say it? is it for those who don't get it? but then, what good does it do if they are not actually thinking for themselves just doing what someone told them to. if you need someone to tell you to think for yourself, then you're not thinking for yourself. so why does he say it?

Subject:an unedited thought on "the third eye"
Posted by:drunkencarousal.
Time:7:41 pm.
Mood: blah.
one of the most endearing qualities of "the third eye" is the rhythm- it is also an incredibly haunting quality, the song itself has a ghostly essence that can give you goosebumps if you're in the right mood. this is obvious, but the reason why i love the rhythm of this song has either eluded me up until now or i hadn't thought about it. but i have found that this rhythm seems to be representative of the human body. the opening resembles a heartbeat, and the guitar line reminds me of breathing or the rhythm of bodily functions; but specifically when maynard first sings "so good to see you..." the guitar makes this very up and down, in and out, type sound that very much resembles breathing.
often times when i listen to this song, i envision something out there, metaphysical. but i'm beginning to think the purpose of the song is very physical. instead of thinking of being in outer space, think of your own body. think of the flesh of it, the murkiness, like being underwater, in a womb. this song is like being wrapped in something living, which we are, we are alive, we are flesh, but it's looking at your own body from a different perspective. not only being in your body, but understanding what that means. being a part of it. "the third eye" shows how the mind is just as integral to the body as the brain, perhaps even more so. your mind (not just the brain) has a hand in your body's functions, it is, or should be, in tune with these functions.
or perhaps it's the other way around, your body is part of your mind. or outer space. maybe it's the same thing.

Subject:nothing could beat complete denial
Posted by:drunkencarousal.
Time:3:06 pm.
i want to say this to start off. i realize that point of this community is to appreciate all of tool- such as every member. too many people focus too much on maynard james keenan, or worse focus on him in the wrong ways. and it's important to know there is more to a band that it's frontman. it's frustrating to see this happen.

however, you can be crazy about maynard keenan in here if that's the way you feel. your are allowed to proclaim that you long to meet him, that you get that fuzzy feeling when you look at his picture (this is a little confession of my own by the way). because let's face it, you can't help but focus on the frontman, he is the center figure of his band by default. partically one who injects so much of himself into the music. maynard is intelligent, incredibly charismatic- an amazing leader. what do you expect? but he has made a conscious decision not to abuse that, and i think we as fans should respect that.

so what i'm saying here, don't stifle yourselves for the benefit of political correctness. it's unhealthy. but out of decency to a person you admire, keep yourselves in check
